A step-by-step guide to resolving structured 2D quad meshing errors on NACA airfoils and structured domains.
If you are working on a 2D aerodynamic simulation (like a NACA 0012 airfoil tutorial) and ANSYS Meshing flags your geometry with red highlights, you are likely encountering two related structured meshing errors.
One or more faces with map mesh controls failed to be mapped mesh. The Quad Mesher failed on one or more of the faces.
Why Do These Errors Happen?
For ANSYS Meshing to apply a Mapped Mesh (Structured Quad) to a 2D surface, two mathematical conditions must be met:
- The 4-Corner Topology Rule: The face must be logically 4-sided. A single continuous fluid domain with an airfoil cutout in the middle cannot be mapped directly because it is a multi-connected domain (a surface with a hole).
- The Equal Division Rule: Opposite bounding edges of any mapped face must have the exact same number of node divisions.
When ANSYS fails to create a Mapped Mesh due to mismatched divisions or topology, it falls back to the unstructured Quad Mesher. If your edge refinement near the airfoil walls is very tight, the Quad Mesher also fails, highlighting the entire face in red.
5 Steps to Fix the Meshing Errors
1. Change Edge Sizing Behavior from "Soft" to "Hard"
By default, ANSYS Edge Sizing is set to Soft. This allows the solver to automatically adjust the number of nodes on an edge to maintain element transition ratios. However, this disrupts your structured division counts across opposite block edges.
- Select all your Edge Sizing controls under the Mesh Outline tree.
- In the Details View, change Behavior from Soft to Hard.
2. Audit and Match Opposite Edge Division Counts
Go through every partitioned block (such as your C-grid or O-grid domain around the airfoil) and verify the following:
- Top domain boundary divisions == Bottom domain boundary divisions.
- Airfoil upper surface divisions == Outer top boundary matching segment divisions.
- Radial/vertical block cuts must carry identical division counts across all parallel edges.
3. Check and Synchronize Edge Bias Directions
When refining elements near the airfoil surface or trailing edge:
- Inspect the yellow arrows on the selected edges when configuring Bias.
- Ensure opposite edges refine in the same direction (e.g., both refining towards the wall or trailing edge). Mismatched bias orientation distorts quad elements and breaks mapping.
4. Verify Domain Partitioning (DesignModeler / SpaceClaim)
Ensure your 2D domain is properly split into 4-sided sub-faces around the airfoil:
- C-Grid Topology: A parabolic/arc block around the leading edge, rectangular blocks over the upper and lower surfaces, and rectangular wake blocks behind the trailing edge.
- If any single face has 5 or more bounding edges, split it into separate 4-sided faces using Face Split tools before meshing.
5. Clear Cached Data and Re-Generate
Once adjustments are made:
- Right-click Mesh in the Tree Outline → select Clear Generated Data.
- Right-click Mesh again → select Generate Mesh.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Are all Edge Sizing behaviors set to Hard?
- Do opposite block edges have identical Division numbers?
- Are all geometry sub-faces strictly 4-sided?
- Are bias arrows pointing towards the correct wall/refinement targets?
