How to... quick modify geometry to make new analysis on Design Modeler - Ansys Static Structural

In today's post, I would like to show you how to easily and quickly modify the geometry for strength calculations in Structural modules. Two steps are enough to easily change the model topology in the Design Modeler module.

How to move and rescale part in geometry - Design Modeler

In the first step, you should scale the model to the sizes you are interested in. We use the SCALE option for this type of activity. A more detailed description of this function and how to correctly modify a model with it in Design Modeler can be found in the following post.

how to scale part or model post

After the model is scaled, certain elements may move away from the main geometry. In this situation, you need to measure the distance of the shift to properly merge the entire model. For this type of operation, we use the Distance Finder option. You can find the path to this option below.

When we measure the offset distance, we need to use this value in the Translate option to merge our exploded model. In our case, the distance we have to reduce is 0.113 m along the Z axis.

Measured distance  - Design Modeler

After measuring the exploded distance, select the Translate option in DM (design modeler). You can see the path to this option below.

After selecting the Translate option, we change the definition of the part shift to Direction Definition - Coordinates (see figure below). Due to the fact that our shift was only along the Z axis, only this direction is defined by the previously measured distance of 0.113 m. We enter this value as shown in the figure below.

After completing all of the above steps, our geometry will be merged again. Then, with the modified geometry (scale), we can start new calculations. Of course, we can use all these steps for both structural and CFD calculations.
