What is Image-based meshing ?

 Ansys itself doesn't currently offer direct image-based meshing functionality. Traditionally, mesh generation in Ansys relies on a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model.

Here's a breakdown of typical meshing workflow in Ansys:


  1. Create a CAD Model: You would first design your geometry using a CAD software and export it in a format compatible with Ansys.
  2. Import and Geometry Editing (Optional): The CAD model is imported into Ansys meshing tools. In some cases, you might need to simplify or modify the geometry for better meshing.
  3. Mesh Generation: Ansys meshing tools allow you to define element types, size, and other parameters to create a mesh suitable for your simulation type (e.g., CFD, FEA).
  4. Mesh Quality Check: The generated mesh is reviewed for quality. Ansys provides tools to identify and improve any poorly shaped elements that could affect simulation accuracy.

However, there are two approaches to consider if you have image data and need to perform simulations in Ansys:

  1. External Software for Image-based Meshing: Several third-party software packages specialize in image-based meshing. These tools can convert 3D image data (like CT scans) into a surface or volume mesh. Once you have this mesh, you can import it into Ansys for further refinement and simulation setup.

  2. CAD Reconstruction and Meshing: Another approach involves using image processing software to convert your image data into a usable CAD model. Once you have a solid or surface model, you can import it into Ansys and proceed with traditional mesh generation techniques.

While Ansys doesn't have built-in image-based meshing, these alternative approaches can bridge the gap between image data and simulation workflows within Ansys.
